Pizhemskaya rospis has been known in documents since 17th century
and has its origin in the culture of Old believers,
who moved from the South in an attempt to protect their beliefs.
They decorated their books with leaves, flowers, monograms;
then they transferred this onto the household items such as spoons, bowls, furniture, etc.
The colors of this painting are main natural ones - red, green, yellow and black.
The distinctive feature is that the drawing is geometrical pattern
made with black paint (soot with larch tree tar) in the shape of diamonds, dots, crosses, etc. with some red and green.
This kind of painting is close to Mezen painting, although Mezen colors are red and black,
and Pizhma painting does not have horses and birds which are typical for Mezen.
