Natalya Skripilyova - traditional Russian textile doll, patchwork.

Shadrinsk, Kurgan region, Russia

For 12 years I have been working at the folk art center Lad (means harmony, agreement) teaching children traditional women’s crafts.
I also restore ancient traditional Russian (Siberian Russia) ways of textile making -
tablet weaving, chenille embroidery, chenille-woven double-facing rugs, rug making, etc.
Expeditions to villages give us a lot of knowledge from those who still keep and treasure old traditions.
Each of these findings is a wonder – seeing a masterpiece made with simple tools.
Peasants could engineer tools and make complex and intricate patterns.

Can a contemporary woman weave a sash for her man with the words of song or prayer,
to prepare the dowry for the whole life (hand embroidered table cloths, towels, homemade rugs, clothing, and so on)?
Today a business woman thinks that it is not necessary to be able to sew on a button.
But the feminine side in a woman depends on women’s handcrafts.
That is why it is important to teach girls how to tie ribbons into bow, to sew clothing for their dolls,
to let them play an important game in the life to be ready to become a caring mother.

The cloth doll was meant to guard the owner.  From ancient time it was believed that having no eyes/face on the doll prevent any spirit from taking over the doll.
Using natural materials (flax, linen, hem, nettle, wool colored with natural dyes) makes the doll strong and safe.

Being a grandmother, I started making dolls first for my grandchildren, and then I felt that I found the call of my heart.
Among many types of dolls, the show-off doll is the best way to show my knowledge of traditional costume and skills.
I use all traditional techniques for the doll, but in miniature- embroidery with golden thread,
pearl embroidery, for authenticity I try to find imitation of old fabrics, trims and laces.
Creation of such a doll is inclusion to the mystery of folk art and to the knowledge of ancient ancestors.
